Impromptu 5k

|

I walk in the door about a half hour past midnight on Saturday to find an email from a friend saying that she's gonna run the Ravenswood 5k. Oh, and on-site registration is between 6:30am and 7:30am. That would give me about 5 1/2 hours of sleep. I'm thinking this is absolutely insane, but I decide to set my alarm and see how I feel in the morning. Oddly enough, I get up a few minutes before the alarm completely on my own. So I'm feeling pretty good about this. I call my friend and tell her to keep an eye out for me. We had great weather for the race itself, and we ran a great time. Somewhere around 28:30, which is an astounding 9:12 pace. Of course my knees are letting me know that I may have pushed myself a little too hard. Anyhow, that was a great way to start the day!

Update: My official time is 28:33 which is a 9:12 pace.

America Doing God's Work?

|

As usual, the President managed to tweak me during his press conference last night. From the transcript:

Freedom is the Almighty's gift to every man and woman in this world. And as the greatest power on the face of the earth, we have an obligation to help the spread of freedom. ... And my job as the president is to lead this nation and to making the world a better place.

I think that truly summarizes the way he feels. He really feels as if are doing God's work by invading Iraq. That God has somehow has endorsed this war is very disturbing for me. Maybe that's how The Crusades started out.

Frontline: Diet Wars

|

Tonights' Frontline was a great show about the the diets out today, the reality about obesity in America, and how to control it. The main point is what I've been learning for the last 16 months: it's calories that matter. And stay away from those refined carbs. Instead, concentrate on carbs such as whole grains, brown rice, fruits and vegetables. And if you're worried about cardiovascular disease, stay away from saturated fats. Oh, and all the diets are gimmicks. Just eat less, and learn how to eat well, and exercise. Anyhow, I would recommend you catch a re-run of it sometime if you've been curious about all the diets out there and want to learn more about losing weight.

Joogle

|

While reading Norman Geras' blog, I ran across this article:

What is a Jew? Those hoping to find out from a Google search are in for an unpleasant surprise. The first of 1.75 million entries that appear when you type "Jew" into the search engine is an anti-Semitic site.

This discovery by a New York real-estate developer, among others, has sparked a cyberspace showdown, and a bid to alter the situation by a small band of Internet experts.

To push the anti-Semitic site down on the Google list, people have decided to try a Google bomb. It's pretty simple. If you have a website or blog, just put this link on it:

Jew [linking to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jew]

That'll help drive up the page rank above the anti-Semitic site.
